The Pyrenean Mastiff or Mastín del Pirineo is a gentle giant originating from the foothills of the Pyrenees in the Spanish province of Aragon. Traditionally used as a livestock guardian, this majestic breed is known for its calm temperament, impressive size and unwavering devotion to its family. Despite its imposing appearance, the Pyrenean Mastiff is renowned for its gentle, trustworthy and well-balanced nature, making it a wonderful companion for both families and experienced dog owners seeking a loyal protector.
Today, the breed remains relatively rare outside of Spain, but its popularity continues to grow thanks to its affectionate character and dignified presence.
The Pyrenean Mastiff likely originated from original Molosser dogs many centuries ago. In the remote Pyrenees mountains these Molossers developed
into several Livestock Guardian Dog breeds, which today we know as the Pyrenean Mastiff ( Mastín del Pirineo), the Spanish Mastiff ( Mastín Español) and the French Pyrenean Mountain Dogs or Great Pyrenees. The Pyrenean Mastiff almost became extinct after the Spanish Civil War followed by WW II as little food was available and hardly any bears or wolves were around.
In the 1970’s wolves were reintroduced and Pyrenean Mastiffs were again needed as guardians. A group of Spanish enthusiasts for this breed worked hard to revive the breed by a special breeding program which resulted in the majestic breed we know today. Apart from great size, strength and grace, the exceptional character was important when reviving the breed. They are gentle, non-aggressive and have an even temperament. Yes, the Pyrenean Mastiff still possesses fighting skills as a result of being Livestock Guardians through centuries, but will only use those skills to protect itself, its flock, its pack or its home. They will try to avoid fights and will only fight if they are pressed. They know exactly when there is danger. For families they are wonderful companions and very gentle to those they love, especially children.
Today the Pyrenean Mastiff is relatively rare ( 4000-6000 worldwide) but have spread throughout Western- and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, the USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia and Japan.
