A Historic Moment for the Pyrenean Mastiff at Crufts 2026

At the world-famous Crufts in Birmingham, United Kingdom, the magnificent Pyrenean Mastiff made its long-awaited debut on March 5th, 2026 — marking a truly historic milestone for this ancient and noble livestock guardian breed.

For a breed with centuries of history in the mountains of Spain, its first appearance at the world’s largest dog show is an extraordinary achievement. This landmark moment was made possible through the dedication, passion, and tireless efforts of Shane Tychowski and Karly Gould from Mendiko Kennels, who have worked relentlessly to bring recognition to the breed within the UK.

Three Pyrenean Mastiffs entered the ring, and it was Kane De Reis d’Aragon, affectionately known as “Turo,” who captured the spotlight. Competing in the Imported Working Dogs category, Turo was awarded Best of Breed, an incredible accomplishment for the breed’s Crufts debut.

Handled by Karly Gould, Turo went on to represent the breed in the Best in Group ring, a moment broadcast to a national audience by the BBC. For such a rare breed, this level of exposure is an invaluable step forward in raising awareness and appreciation among dog enthusiasts and the wider public.

Supporting this milestone, Mendiko hosted a dedicated stand at Crufts, welcoming a steady stream of visitors eager to learn about the breed. Interest from the public was overwhelming, highlighting the growing fascination with this impressive and noble guardian dog.

Currently, there are 31 registered Pyrenean Mastiffs in the UK, along with several more unregistered individuals. With such a successful and highly visible debut at Crufts, hopes are high that the breed will continue to grow in numbers and recognition both within the United Kingdom and internationally.

About Mendiko

Mendiko is an established livestock guardian conservation and show kennel devoted to the preservation and promotion of the magnificent Pyrenean Mastiff. With extensive experience in guardian breeds, the kennel is committed to maintaining correct breed type, sound temperament, and the historic working qualities that define these impressive dogs—while also presenting them successfully in the show ring.

Their journey with the breed began in 2020, when they imported their first Pyrenean Mastiff to the United Kingdom. What began as admiration quickly developed into a deep commitment to the breed. They were drawn not only to the Pyrenean Mastiff’s commanding presence, but also to its calm intelligence, natural protective instincts, and remarkable devotion to both livestock and family.

Working closely behind the scenes with the The Kennel Club, Mendiko helped support the recognition of the interim breed standard, enabling the Pyrenean Mastiff to begin its journey toward official recognition. As a result, they had the honour and privilege of becoming the first people ever to exhibit the breed at a Kennel Club licensed event in December 2025.

Earlier that same year, during the summer of 2025, they also presented the first British-bred Pyrenean Mastiff at an Fédération Cynologique Internationale event. The dog was shown under the respected former Spanish breeder and judge Rafael Malo Alcrudo, widely regarded as one of the key figures responsible for preserving and safeguarding the breed. It was a moment they continue to hold very dear.

At Mendiko, the goal is simple but important: to contribute positively to the future of this rare livestock guardian through careful breeding, responsible ownership, and dedicated conservation. Their mission is to ensure that the Pyrenean Mastiff remains both a capable working dog and an exceptional companion for generations to come.
