The Pyrenean Mastiff is an extremely rare breed in Japan, with only 11 registered dogs and one unregistered import currently alive. Minako Hara is the only active breeder in the country. Due to the very small population, the breed faces serious challenges such as limited bloodlines, inbreeding risks, and few opportunities for comparison and proper evaluation. Strict quarantine regulations also make importing dogs difficult, as they cannot enter Japan before at least nine months of age.
The breed has been preserved thanks to the dedication of a small number of enthusiasts, but there is still limited understanding of the Pyrenean Mastiff’s unique characteristics, including its slow development, structure, movement, and stable temperament. Opportunities to study multiple high-quality dogs and bloodlines in Japan are very limited, making education and correct communication of the breed standard essential for the breed’s future.
Despite these challenges, Minako has built strong international relationships by visiting overseas breeders and learning directly from them. The visit of Spanish judges Carlos Salas Melero and Ana Mesto in April last year helped increase recognition of the breed in Japan, especially when Murtoi’s Eolo was awarded Best in Show, marking an important moment for breed awareness.
After a 12-year break, Minako produced a litter three years ago and carefully selected owners who can provide lifelong care. Contracts require lifetime ownership, the return of dogs if owners cannot continue care, and provisions for congenital health issues. These policies aim to protect the breed’s future.
Participation in dog shows is seen not as competition but as an important opportunity for education and proper evaluation. The future of the Pyrenean Mastiff in Japan depends not on increasing numbers alone, but on responsible breeding that preserves health, type, temperament, and the true character of the breed through long-term planning and international cooperation.
International cooperation is essential for this rare breeds future.
